Beneath the Stars

Once the castle tour was over, Mr. O’Byrne led them to a cobblestone patio with wrought iron table and chairs. The chairs had beige cushions and she, Sean, and the O’Byrne’s sat and enjoyed the brackish light breeze. His wife brought out tea and biscuits. Emily smiled knowing exactly what Lucy would say if someone brought her biscuits and they were actually cookies. “Cookies are biscuits?” she would ask.

God, she missed Lucy, though she never expected it to hit her so hard. She thought she needed a break from her responsibility, but the reality was she just needed a break from having to spend the bulk of her days with co-workers who likely didn’t care if she lived or died.

“There’s nothing like that air,” the older man said with a contented smile. His comment pulled her out of her own head.

Sean nodded. “It reminds me, I spend too much time at home and in town.”

“You should get out more. Luckily this pretty lass found you.” Mr. O’Byrne winked at her.

Emily blushed a little. Just what did Mr. O’Byrne think was going on between her and Sean? Who was she kidding, she knew exactly what he thought. He thought she and Sean were a couple, and in this moment - so they were.

He wasn’t denying it or correcting the chatty castle owner or his wife, so she saw no reason to. What she wanted to do was slip away to the powder room so she could freshen up and sneak a few photographs to Lucy and mom. The pictures from the top of the battlement walls were breathtaking and she just knew the photos would send Lucy’s imagination soaring.

“May I use your toilet?” she asked. It still felt strange to ask for the toilet instead of the bathroom, but it was one of the many things Kate stressed that Emily and Sarah would need to get used to for the next three weeks. Toilet, as a word by itself, seemed so undignified. Even unladylike. Of course, that was probably that Puritan cultural thing most Americans had going on when it came to sex, farting, and the fact that everyone poops.

“In the door here, straight across, and right into the bog,” Mr. O’Byrne said, pointing.

His wife groaned at his instruction and got up, leading the way. “Sorry about my husband. He doesn’t always have manners.”

“Oh, no, it’s okay. Your hospitality has been wonderful.” Emily nodded her head a little.

Mrs. O’Byrne showed her right to the restroom door and left her. Once alone, Emily made sure she had a good cellular connection and sent a few of the castle photos. A response text came back immediately from her mom’s number.

“So jelly!” it said.

Emily smiled. It was Lucy, and this was the first time she’d spent away from Lucy this long.

Knowing she would be missed if she stayed much longer, she rinsed her hands, made sure she looked presentable, and left the sanctuary of the toilet to rejoin Sean and their hosts. She didn’t want to be rude.
